Hacking (as a buzzword)

Definitely one of my favorite words, when spanning from an executive it usually means doing things out of the norm, when originating from a true “maker” it refers to making things happen  despite current limitations.

And you can’t really blame me for loving the word, its use on the last decade has turned from a fear mongering campaign towards the nerds, to a flattering adjective to be used in business, few things can be as technical and Buzzy as organizing, participating or attending a Hackathon.

Unfortunately the hacking spirit in business seems to be compromised by the overeducated process oriented philosophies presented from big shot consulting companies, business or executives. Long are the days where “hacking” was feasible ( as long as you used the correct hat), particularly with the new era the Tech industry is facing, where the risk might not be low enough to warrant the experience.

I now ask myself, is the beauty of hacking for business really is in the eyes of the beholder?.

After more than a decade working on the business tech space a couple of stories come to mind when a business hack provided positive results, but a lot more show up that remind me of the unguided and chaotic nature of the practice, steering me to avoid it (for business at least).

Regardless, I  really wanted to hear your thoughts:

Is hacking (in the business sense) now just a buzzword?

Do you have any stories to share of a successful business hack?

Was it worth it?

Would it still be feasible to implement today?

Looking forward to reading your comments
